FAQ
Mold Questions, Answered
The questions people ask most when they find mold, before and during remediation.
Phone answered 24 hours a day. Talk to a remediation specialist now.
General questions are below. Each service page has questions specific to that work, for example mold testing, attic mold and remediation cost.
During remediation
What will you do to protect the rest of my home?
The work area is sealed with plastic sheeting and a zipper door and kept under negative air pressure, so air flows into the containment rather than out. HEPA air scrubbers filter the air inside. The full sequence is on our mold remediation page.
Will you have to remove drywall?
If mold is growing in drywall, insulation or carpet, those materials usually can't be cleaned reliably and are removed. Wood framing and other solid materials can usually be cleaned and dried.
Should I turn off my HVAC?
If the system serves the affected area, it's usually best to keep it off until the area is contained, so spores aren't pulled into the ducts. Ask us when you call. Our HVAC and duct mold page explains more.
How long does it take?
Anything from a day for a small contained area to a week or more for large jobs with drying and testing. See how long mold remediation takes.
Cost and next steps
How is mold remediation priced?
From an inspection, based on the size and location of the affected area, the materials involved, the containment needed and any testing. More on the remediation cost page.
Do you work on commercial and rental properties?
Yes. See commercial mold remediation and our guide to mold in rentals.
Which areas do you cover?
Los Angeles and nearby cities. The service areas page lists them.
How do I get started?
Call (424) 479-7915. The phone is answered 24 hours a day.
Before you call
Can I clean small areas of mold myself?
Often, yes. The EPA's general guidance is that small areas on hard surfaces, roughly 10 square feet or less, can usually be cleaned by a homeowner with detergent and water, gloves and eye protection, as long as the moisture source is fixed. Larger areas, hidden growth, or mold after sewage or repeated leaks warrant professional help.
Is black mold more dangerous than other mold?
Color doesn't tell you how risky mold is. Many species look dark. What matters is how much there is, where it is and who's exposed. Our guide what is black mold explains more.
Can mold make me sick?
Mold can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in some people, according to the CDC. If you have health concerns, talk to your doctor. We can remove the mold and fix the cause, but we don't give medical advice.
Should I test for mold before calling?
Usually not. Home test kits can't tell you where mold is growing or how much there is. An inspection that finds the moisture source is more useful. See inspection vs testing.
Does homeowners insurance cover mold?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Mold from a sudden covered event, such as a burst pipe, is treated differently from mold caused by a long-term leak or maintenance. Check with your insurer. We can provide documentation of what we find.
How quickly does mold grow after a leak?
Guidance from the EPA and CDC is to dry wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth. Read the first 48 hours after a leak.
